Policy and Contexts essays

Policy and Contexts essays For the following assignment, I will summarise and interpret a portfolio of documents and commentaries I have collected that address the study of Policy and Contexts. First, I will provide full bibliographical reference to each piece of literature, along with a brief background and the main ideas that have been conveyed. I will then draw out and describe some of the discourses in the literature, indicating the assumptions and values about various elements involved in the field of trade union training in the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU). Newman, M 1993, Union culture, in The third contract: Theory and practice in trade union training, Stewart Victor Publishing, pp. 15-20. This chapter is contained in an award-winning book (Houle Award for Literature in Adult Education) written by Michael Newman. He has extensive experience as an adult educator, working in both the United Kingdom and Australia in the fields of community, tertiary and trade union education. Currently, he is a senior lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, in the School of Adult and Language Education. The aim of this chapter is to provide its audience with an awareness that although there are significant cultural differences between many unions, there are also many factors that contribute to a general union culture that exists throughout the whole union movement. Newman begins the chapter by outlining what some peoples perception of what the union movement is. He then attempts to enlighten the reader by providing a general definition, along with some examples of how unions differ from each other. An explanation of the structural changes that were taking place within the union movement is then presented, along with some examples of the difficulties that occur when the cultures from different unions have to come together to work as one. The remainder of the chapter then looks at five factors that contribut...

Conflict in The Middle East Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Conflict in The Middle East - Assignment Example Various western states had varied stands regarding the matter. First, in the need to quench the conflict, the British reduced the migration of the Jews into Palestine. In addition, they rejected the suggestion of an independent state in Palestine. Second, the United States approved for the creation of an independent Jews state. This was despite the fact the Jews were only a third of the whole Palestine population. Nonetheless, the United Nation intervened and partitioned Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab State. Consequently, both sides remained bitter (Spielvogel p896-898). The emergence of Colonel Abdel Nasser as a new leader in Egypt raised the hopes of the possible end of Arab-Israel conflict. Through the help of the United States he was able to reclaim the Suez Canal which of great interest to the British and the French. Thereafter, Egypt led to the formation of the Palestine Liberation Movement to unite the Palestinians (Spielvogel p896-898). Understanding the present day Middle East conflict enables one to have better understanding of the possible causes of the start and failures to ending the

Leadership Communication Presentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Leadership Communication Presentation - Essay Example To counter this argument, another manager may say, â€Å"Removing all our fringe benefits would result in low morale for the employees.† Obviously, the second manager was using the straw man fallacy by restating what the other manager said, and saying â€Å"removing all our fringe benefits† when the first manager actually said a reduction in the fringe benefits. These conversations are typical in organizations especially when meetings are held to find solutions for problems that confront the company. There are several ways to overcome or prevent a straw man fallacy in an organization. First, in making vital decisions for the company, it is better to put the arguments for each position or alternative in writing; rather than having a face-to-face debate with the proponents of different sides. In this way, the possibility of misinterpretation and misrepresentation is eliminated. Another way to prevent a straw man fallacy is to show proofs, data or statistics in presenting alternative solutions to organizational problems. If these information are presented, it would be hard to refute by just a straw man fallacy. Lastly, it is suggested that to overcome a straw man fallacy, those involved in making major decisions for the firm should be well-informed. According to Talisse and Aikin, the success of the straw man fallacy depends on the ignorance of the audience; thus, if the people responsible for decision-making are well-informed of the various positions, then they can have an intelli gent and reasoned discourse without being swayed by fallacies

Are patents good or bad for Economics Term Paper

Are patents good or bad for Economics - Term Paper Example ‘Patent’ is the rights approved by the government that is bestowed to the inventor or patentee for special use of the invention for a restricted time period in the country or region, subjected to the prevailing law of that country or region. The duration for protection is generally 14 to 20 years including possible extension of 7 years (Bardowell, â€Å"Patent System†). The policy of patenting is an important part of the economy as it helps in the process of innovation and invention to the country. The paper aims to substantiate the importance of patents for an economy. For the society, the benefits are achieved when the invention moves into the public realm after a certain period of time after the invention. Also the invention is revealed to the society with the expectation that there will be improvement in the invention. The patentee holds no such intention of keeping it as a trade secret. The granting of patent may sometimes become risky for the government. The term for which duration of patents are restricted (20 years) is very elongated. For such approach, innovation or improvement on the invention might get hold for a long period of time. But granting patents always keep the government on the safe side with because they can control the innovation and invention, be it good or bad. The historical data shows that patents have always produced good results for the economy. In this section of the paper, an article from the magazine â€Å"The Economist† has been cited and analyzed. The article named ‘The good, the bad and the ugly’ has explained the traits of urge towards innovation in Britain. The objective of the article was to rate Britain as a knowledge based powerhouse among the world countries. The article establishes that for upgrading the economic growth, governments provide good reason to promote innovation. As patent is the heart of invention through innovation in the field of R&D, governments take initiatives in

Comparing Wealth, Power, and Virtue in Measure for Measure and Mrs. Warrens Profession :: comparison compare contrast essays

Wealth, Power, and Virtue in Measure for Measure and Mrs. Warren’s Profession       As seen in the dramas Measure for Measure and Mrs. Warren’s Profession, the Elizabethan and Victorian periods have different views of wealth, power and virtue. To compare these views, one should start by defining the different views of virtue. The people of the Elizabethan times see virtue in obtaining a balance of their three souls and as promoting order within their society and city. Also in this period of time, wealth and power were rarely gained, but when they were, it was due to virtue. Conversely, in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, virtue is interpreted as a person trying to change how the poor were treated by the industrialists; and this could only be done when a person already had wealth or power.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Measure for Measure, Isabella starts off seeming to be a very virtuous person: she is entering a very strict nunnery and living a purely rational and sinless life. As the play goes on she chooses to keep her virtue by not sleeping with Angelo. However, we start to see her virtue come into question when she coldly and with no compassion tells her brother Claudio to "Die Quickly!" (III, i, 135) This shows that she is not using her emotional soul. But, at the end of the play, Isabella shows that she has the ability to utilize her emotional soul when she forgives Angelo; at the same time proving she has a balanced soul. From this action, the Duke realizes that Isabella is truly virtuous and then, because of this, asks her to marry him (V, i, 530). We can clearly see that Isabella is rewarded for her virtuous actions at the conclusion of Measure to Measure.   This positive conclusion demonstrates the Elizabethan society's tendency to prize virtue as achieved through a balanced soul.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Isabella is not only seen to be virtuous because of her balanced soul, she would have also been seen as virtuous because her actions to preserve order in Vienna.   At the beginning of Measure for Measure, the Duke goes into

India’s large population †Asset or Liability? Essay

In his theory of population, Malthus stressed the need of keeping population within limits to the point he called Optimum. At this point in time, India has a population of about 1.27 billion people, and it supports upto 17% of the entire world’s population. Of these 1.27 billion people, 50% are below the age of 25, and 65% are below the age of 35. This means that the major part on India’s population are students and young workers. There are more workers than dependents, which is good for any economy. However, it is important to remember that while at this point in time, India’s vast population is a liability, it has the capacity to become an asset. How is India’s population a liability? 1] Limited resources –   In the recent years, India has been witnessing acute food shortages that has pushed up the prices of commodities like wheat, sugar, rice, pulses, making it difficult for people to get the basic necessities. As the population is growing fast, the same amount of food produced for years is no longer sufficient. This results in shortage of supply and prices increase. When a few areas are urbanised, all industries, plants and other institutions concentrate in these areas. The whole rural-urban migration trend depicts the same picture, where people from small cities and villages move to big industrial areas for work, business and studies often leaving fewer people taking care of farming and the underdeveloped areas. The major problem of resource scarcity is over-concentration of population in few areas; whereas resources may remain available in regions where there is shortage of people. How is India’s population an asset? 1] Labour – There are instances where lesser number of inhabitants is a dilemma. Countries like Canada, Australia and Libya are the examples where smaller population is a handicap. Many developing countries face scarcity of labour,  both of skilled and unskilled manpower. India, however, does not have this problem. We have many young and skilled labourers. There are many examples where big population is considered a desirable phenomenon for developing nations. For big manufacturing firms all over the globe, deficiency of cheap labour is one of the major issues. If a country has more labour force it can be availed by initiating different vocational training programmes. This will not only make these peopled skilled and productive but will also help them earn a good standard of living. For example, China has trained its manpower by efficiently utilising it and made it available for business firms as cheap and productive labour force. The giant multinationals have their plants and manufacturing industries in China. India is another major example; big foreign companies have their call centres operating in India just because India has large, cheap and skilled labour force.

Civil Rights Violation - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 862 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/03/22 Category History Essay Level High school Tags: Civil Rights Movement Essay Did you like this example? Police brutality has and has always been an issue in Civil Right Violations. Many of the cases have been in crime-filled cities, such as Houston. Out of the many cases Danny Thomas, Larry Moore, and Marlin Gipson were some the citizens that were brutally harmed by police that were carelessly violating the 8th and 14th amendment. Statistics Towards Brutality In just little bit under 9 months of 2018, there have been approximately 646 deaths caused by police brutality. Police brutality has always been a problem in the United States of America (U.S.A). Since 2000, police have killed 5600 people in the U.S.A. As of recently, it has divided us a country even more with a bigger barrier. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Civil Rights Violation" essay for you Create order Claims of Justification for Their Violations In a crime-filled city, many cases of suspected police brutality can be justified. Many cops may feel as if their lives are at risk in most cases. Police officers say, in defense, that there is always danger in their job. They say that there is always an uneasy feeling when doing a traffic stop, since they dont know if they are armed or not. When police officers see someone move strangely or hold something, their automatic instincts tell them to act, sadly resulting in these shootings. Usually, these officers have seen and had been in numerous of dangerous situations. Especially officers that are mostly in places where there is mostly nothing but crime in the area. These police officers are always prepared for the worst, and mostly always think there is danger, even when there might not be any danger present. Cases of Brutality Larry Moore was a victim of police brutality in Houston, Texas in 2015. He was stopped and soon been assaulted before any type of crime was even committed. He had recently come out towards the media in 2017 because of the rise of police brutality in America and its effect on the nations wellbeing. In the early months of 2018, Danny Ray Thomas was shot and killed by police in Houston. Mr. Thomas was unarmed and was following the sheriffs directions to the best of his abilities. Granted his pants were at his ankles, that had not given the sheriff the right to shoot the human being. Marlin Gipson is an example of Americas youth being harassed to the extent to where fear is the only emotion a human can express. Mr. Gipson was in a neighborhood in Houston passing out business cards for his lawn service when police officer, Alan Rosen, racially profiled him and instantly tried to arrest the young man. Marlin Gipson had suspected brutality, so he had retreated to his home nearby. Hiding in the restroom, Gipson had feared for his life. His family had let Alan Rosen in the house and soon Mr. Rosen broke down the restroom door and released a police hound to attack Marlin Gipson while he was being tased by a stun gun. Solutions Police should be charged with assault or any other crimes against an unarmed civilian, regardless of position in the law. The problem is that not enough police officers are being charged with violation of the 8th and 14th amendment like a normal person would be only because they represent the law. Another solution would be to allow for the citizens of America to be more aware of police brutality. By allowing for popular figures to speak out against the brutality without having any backlash. This would allow for the youth to become more aware in todays issues. Implementation To implement these solutions the Legislative Branch should create laws to have police officers charged more as if they were a normal person being charged with assault. The executive branch would then enforce those laws. Celebrities play a huge role in society and without a doubt many young people will follow through with what they say. Granted what they say can be misleading, if their managers are able to convince them to portray a meaningful message to the youth of America about the brutality that has started to divide them as a nation. Kendrick Lamar had produced his most successful album to date during the excessive rise of police brutality. This album was named To Pimp A Butterfly and it portrays a meaningful message towards brutality in words that the youth can understand. In the song Alright, Kendrick Lamar states, Lookin at the world like, Where do we go? and we hate po-po wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho. He received immediate backlash from the media and would be suppr essed. Suppression leads to silence and when theres silence no one learns. Conclusion In todays America, police brutality has divided us all. Whether you support the movement or justify the cops, nevertheless we are all Americans. Police have killed many United States citizens, but for what? Failure to have proper training? Failure to conduct reasonable actions? Or is plain abuse of power that their feeble mind condones? The lives of Larry Moore, Danny Ray Thomas, and Marlin Gipson were severely scarred or even lost. Human lives are being lost every day to this brutality in Houston. Families are being torn apartThe nation is being torn apart.
